What is Schedule 26?
Schedule 26 is the updated statutory framework that replaces the former Section 44 requirements under the now-superseded Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994. These requirements have been modernised and incorporated into the Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022, which now govern statutory supervisor appointments on Western Australian mine sites.
What is Schedule 26 Statutory Supervisor training?
As of 1 April 2026, statutory supervisors must be trained, qualified and registered under the new WHS legislation.
Anyone performing statutory supervisor duties must meet the full eligibility requirements, including:
* Completion of the approved risk management Units of Competency, and;
* Successful completion of the WorkSafe/LGIRS* legislation examination.
Who or What is LGIRS?
LGIRS stands for the Department of Local Government, Industry Regulation and Safety in Western Australia. In the mining context, LGIRS is the department that oversees functions that were previously handled by the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety. LGIRS relates to mining safety through its Worksafe division, which regulates and promotes workplace health and safety in Western Australia, including the mining and exploration industries.
Students who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
